Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth can help your smile look multiple shades brighter, taking years off the appearance of your teeth. As a cosmetic treatment, teeth whitening works well on its own or can easily be added to your comprehensive smile makeover plan.

Types of Teeth Whitening

We offer two types of teeth whitening treatments to choose from, in-chair and home kits.

  • In-Chair Whitening – The fastest and most dramatic whitening comes from our in-chair bleaching sessions. We’ll lightly polish your teeth and then apply a protective gel to coat your gums (and prevent sensitivity). The bleaching agents that are being used are the highest concentration possible, giving you the best results. After we apply the gel to your teeth, a special light is used for approximately eight minutes and then the gel is wiped away. We repeat this another 2-3 cycles, depending on your comfort and the results achieved.

  • Home Kit Whitening – A mould is made of your teeth to create a pair of custom whitening trays. Simply place the concentrated bleach solution into the trays and wear them overnight. Plan to whiten daily for up to two weeks to see full results. From there, you can maintain your bright smile by wearing the trays 1-3 times per week or top-off just prior to special occasions.

Many of our in-chair whitening patients prefer to have home kits made as well. Having a set of whitening trays makes it possible to continue bleaching if desired but to also top off their smile as needed.

A Word About Sensitivity

It’s important to note that people with sensitive teeth may tend to experience heightened tooth sensitivity during a whitening session. If at any time your teeth feel too sensitive, we may need to use fewer applications of gel. Using desensitising toothpaste leading up to and following your treatment can significantly improve the comfort of your overall experience.

Candidates for Whitening
Professional teeth whitening is safe for anyone over the age of 18 who has healthy teeth and gums. It’s not recommended for pregnant women, children under the age of 18 or anyone with active decay or gum disease. If you smoke or drink large amounts of coffee or tea, you may not be able to maintain the type of results that you’re hoping for.

To ensure you meet the qualifications, whitening is only advised within 1-2 months of a recent dental exam. If you have any existing dental work in your smile zone, those restorations may need to be updated to match the rest of your teeth after a whitening treatment.
Protecting Your Investment
We recommend scheduling a six-monthly scale and clean to polish away any excessive stain buildup between checkups. Plan to brush twice and floss once daily. Avoid any food or drink that might stain clothing for the first 24-48 hours after whitening, since your teeth are most vulnerable to re-staining at that time.
Professional Strength Products
Our office uses ZOOM! Whitening gel products for both in-chair and home kit applications. The concentration of ingredients is the highest available for best results and cannot be purchased online, as only dentists are allowed to administer it. Although you may find products that say they’re professional grade, they will still be less potent than what can legally be sold from a private dental practice.
